Papers: Although I will provide a list of questions that will help, each student will chose their own topic. The purpose of the paper is for the student to take a position in the form of a clear, direct thesis on a philosophical issue covered in the texts. They should defend their position by using thoughtful arguments and examples, and be sure to respond to possible criticisms of their position. I do not need, nor do I want, summary or lots of quotations. The focus should be on your well-thought out and well-defended claim about an issue we’ve raised in the course.
Your first paper is 4-5 pages long. Try to be sparing on the quotes. Focus on having a clear thesis, and proving it carefully and in your own words.
Possible topics (if you don’t want to choose your own):
– What is the importance of religion in early America? Discuss using Tocqueville.
– Is Jefferson’s account of religion plausible? Why or why not?
– What is the importance of the separation of powers (federal-states, Republican government, different branches) according to the Federalists? Is this a good account?
– Why is a bill of rights essential for Jefferson? Does this argument make sense?
FOR THESE TOPICS: Do NOT just “answer” them. I don’t want these to be treated like short answers on a test. These are meant to generate theses. Something like, “Tocqueville regards the protestant religion as essential to America because it promotes equality, etc, etc…”
